Professional Visiting, Cold Weather Wear, & the Return of the Turban

January 4th, 2010

Today was my third visit to the Hearst Tower since leaving in late October. It was an important and meaningful visit for two reasons — I was meeting with the lovely Tammy Tibbetts to update her on my life, on Sassy & Sustainable, and to just get some solid face time without the distraction of a party or a shared event. Second, I miss Tammy dearly and feel terrible that I haven’t been able to connect with her beyond email, Twitter, and the occasional rushed run-in.

Over breakfast of my Hearst favorite yogurt parfait with granola & blueberries, I talked Tammy’s ear off about the “tipping point” discovery of S&S, why I’m pursuing grad school in 2011, and my [potential] plans to move back to Philadelphia in fall 2010 or spring 2011. [yes, Philly kids … it’s true!]

Below: My visitor pass to 300 West 57th Street.

The Hearst Tower, a LEED certified building at more than 50 stories, has a large cafeteria on the third floor. I was only “allowed” entrance to the third floor, according to my visitor pass. After working at there for nearly a year and a half, it’s such a strange role reversal, no?

It takes about 30 minutes, give or take a few mins depending on train traffic, to get from 116th & Lex to 57th & 8th Avenue. My journey calls for some serious winter gear in this refreshingly frigid weather.

THE [WINTER] OUTFIT: When Practical Warmth Wins [no matter how ridiculous I may look]

THE HAT: My signature turban, stolen from my brother, acquired from Salvation Army

THE SCARF: Gifted/consignment from Sabrina at anewmode.com

THE COAT: Straight from Russia, late 80s piece, gifted from my Step Grandmother. Why Russia? She wore it there in the [even more] frigid temps during her many visits to her home country

THE GLOVES: What many people call “texting” gloves. I just call them convenient. Love the flap on, flap off aspect. And the fact that these TOTALLY clash with the rest of my outfit.

But like I said: It’s practical warmth, not practical style. Warmth is total emphasis here.

The turban returns! I’m wearing it as I type this. I really could wear it all hours of the day, indoors/outdoors, uptown/downtown. But then, I’d have permanent hat hair.

Below the Russian coat: One of my favorite cropped jackets, another corporate-job-appropriate gift from my mother circa Christmas ‘08. It’s origin? None other than Ann Taylor.

THE OUTFIT: Red & Brown All Over

THE EARRINGS: Gift from my brother, locally made and locally sold at 5 Senses in West Chester, PA

THE SHIRT: Vintage from Zap & Co, purchased 2002 in Lancaster, PA. Est. Circa late 60s

THE BELT: Primark, London, circa 2006

THE SKIRT: Leather Tahari, stolen/gifted from my mother’s closet. This skirt has gotten a lot of wear over the years. It’s like a rugged vintage jacket – the more damaged it becomes, the better it looks.

THE TIGHTS: No idea. I just had ‘em. [I own a LOT of tights. Post on that coming soon]

THE SHOES [that you can’t see here]: Payless, circa 2008

Colored tights: Making a comeback like 1990.

Sequins, sequins, SEQUINS!

Shirt is longer than it appears - but not long enough to drape over the booty with a pair of thick leggings. It’s the type of shirt that needs to be tucked in with a high-waisted skirt or jeans. This leather piece isn’t quite high waisted, but it worked with the cropped jacket, which painted the allusion of a high-waisted skirt beneath.
