Pretty Pastels and A Little Flash = Spring Has Sprung

Friday, March 5th, 2010

For me, March is a “free” style month.

It’s not quite spring, but not quite winter. I wouldn’t say March welcomes spring. Because in all honesty, on the first day of spring, we could get a massive blizzard. I would know. My birthday is March 16th, and I had many childhood birthday parties ruined by the blizzards of ’93 and ’96 in rural Pennsylvania.

So, back to this concept of “free.” Because March warrants no expectations, I’ve decided that neither does my style. I can dress however-the-heck-I-want.

Today’s expectation-less style strategy? Pastels. A shirt dress with biker shorts. And utilitarian combat boots.

THE LOOK: Expectation-less & Waiting for Spring

THE SHIRT: Hamilton Shirts, made-to-fit shirt dress

THE EARRINGS:
Sammy Davis Vintage

THE NECKLACES: Twitter handle, @sammyd22, by Survival of the Hippest. Pearls, gifted consignment.

THE BRACELETS: One is made from recycled materials, the others are gifted consignment.

THE BELT: Guess, Beacon’s Closet circa 2006

THE TIGHTS: Free gift in my Independent Fashion Bloggers conference goody bag, We Love Colors

THE BIKER SHORTS: The SDV running collection, duh

THE BOOTS: HUGE sale at my local Bon-Ton in Lancaster, PA [the equivalent of a Macy's for us]. I bought these boughts because I needed something practical rugged and waterproof, but more stylish than my leopard galoshes that I just … can’t keep semi-hating on.

I had to add a back picture, because you can see just how much um, “thigh” I’m showing here. I grabbed lunch with a friend [shout out to Erin E!] in from California, and she was admiring my legs on the street, i.e. literally touching and quite honestly, almost caressing them. A man walked by laughing and gawking. I guess he liked our girl-on-thigh action.

I received this shirt as a free gift back in my big-name-media-job days. It was made to fit as a shirt dress by Hamilton Shirts. They even monogrammed it for me! I feel like such a prep — and I have to admit, I understand how once you go prep … you never go back. It really can be flavorful and fun.

When Sammy Meets Snazzy Men Who Wear Designer Vintage at Zeller’s Tuxedo …

… she blogs about them.

Meet Harry. Yeah, that’s Harry. Below. You really can’t miss him.

harry in zeller's tuxedos

I met Harry when picking up a white bow tie and cummberbund from Zeller’s Tuxedos on 45th & Lexington for one of the outfits of Derrick Sabater, who will reign as Fresh Prince of New York this Sunday evening.

I thought Harry would be taken aback by my exclamation of pure joy when I first spotted him in the midtown store. But Harry remained cool. I mean, how could he not? The man’s style — consisting of vintage designer goodies that only the most daring would wear — is pure coooooool, man.

And Harry knew the picture-taking drill. He grabbed his hat, jacket, and glasses to complete the look before posing for the cam. The ex personal shopper and fashion socialite gets invites to parties just to show off his style and to entertain guests.

Now, if only that were a legitimate paying job: To show up at parties fabulously dressed and pose for pictures.

Harry, thanks for the information and for the positive energy. If you’re reading, be in touch! We’ll go vintage hunting, dressed to the nines.

Are these in a women’s size 10? Because I most definitely need a pair.

designer pants for men

Harry told me that his friend makes these pants. Love the David Bowie-esque face plastered with paint. Painter’s pants … but not.

Harry, you are a vintage-lover’s inspiration.
