Hello and happy FRIDAY everyone!!!

First, HUGE THANKS to all of you who watched and commented on your favorite head-to-toe vintage look from yesterday’s video at 1 of a Find Vintage. I had so much fun with this video and can’t wait to produce more that inspire your own amazing style!

Second, I have HUGE news for you all: I’m RUNNING THE PITTSBURGH MARATHON THIS WEEKEND!

Besides my obsession with all things vintage & thrift, in the past year I’ve developed a passion for running.

It was almost a year and a half ago that I declared via my 2010 New Year’s Resolution (see “try” resolution #3) that I would “run at least 3 times a week.”

Fast forward to today, and since declaring myself a “runner” I’ve learned so many valuable lessons about life that continue to shape me as a positive, driven individual. Running has given me confidence and character through the discipline of setting goals and resulting demonstration to myself that I can accomplish whatever it is that I set out to do.

And here’s the best part: You can do whatever it is that you want to do, TOO!

I truly believe that we exist on this planet to celebrate the passions of one another. As I share my passion with you in this post today — and the resulting accomplishment of completing my FIRST marathon — I am also celebrating all that you are and all that you live to become.

One of my favorite expressions is to “become your dream.” Keep reading after the jump to see how I’m “becoming my marathon dream” this weekend, and in true Sammy D style, for some vintage fashion RETRO SPORTSWEAR inspiration available on Etsy & Puma now!

When I first moved to NYC in 2008, I remember admiring the runners in Central Park from afar. If you need a guide and checklist for moving to NYC, I got you covered. In that moment of admiration, I did not imagine myself to ever be “one of them.”

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has admired someone’s accomplishments, only to pass over the thought that we’d ever “be like them.”

But here’s the thing: We can be whatever it is that we want to be. Setting out to run “three times a week” jumpstarted a growth within me that could not have happened overnight, but with faith in myself and love for all that I was experiencing with this growth, grew into something more successful than I EVER could have imagined for myself.

That’s the beauty of passion: Keep living that passion, and the success just comes without force.

Keep scrolling for a glimpse into the growth I’m celebrating this weekend as a runner, and to shop 5 of my favorite pieces of sportswear apparel available vintage on Etsy and new on Puma!

The more I believe in myself, the more I believe in YOU!

This weekend’s 26.2 miles is dedicated to the amazing people each and every single one of us are in this very moment … ALWAYS!

xx, SD

LET’S SHOP VINTAGE SPORTSWEAR!

VINTAGE PINK RUNNING SHORTS

ROCK THE LOOK: I’m all about the “bolder, the better.” Running might be a sweaty sport, but that doesn’t mean you can’t NOT look sexy … it just takes confidence to rock the right apparel!

I LOVE pink in an almost obsessive way — from Pepto Bismal pink to powder pink to MAGENTA pink! — if it screams girlie colors, I’m all about it.

And what better way to declare your feminine strength than with a pair of pink running shorts?

BUY THE RETRO STYLE: ’70s running shorts on Etsy, $25

BUY THE MODERN STYLE: Bright pink running shorts from Puma, $27

VINTAGE DUFFEL BAGS

ROCK THE LOOK: Women invest so much style consciousness into their purses … so why not do the same with our gym bags?

The vintage jargon for a gym bag is “duffel bag,” which is the style you see both vintage from Etsy & new from Puma above. I love the structured, one-size-fits-all shape of the bag and the leather handles.

Duffel bags can double for convenient carry-on bags, too!

BUY THE RETRO STYLE: All American vintage gym duffel bag on Etsy, $28.50

BUY THE MODERN STYLE: Campus grip bag from Puma, $55

VINTAGE SPORT EVENTS TEES

retro sport

ROCK THE LOOK: Growing up, I played sports about two seasons out of the year. I was a swimmer during the summer, and for fall I either played field hockey or later in high school, tennis.

So understandably, I collected a TON of sports tees that I’ve since (regretfully!) thrown away. I wish I had my 1996 Swim Club Invitational shirts and those field hockey sweatshirts with my last name on the back.

Oh, the days of childhood sportswear that would now be considered vintage!

Thankfully sellers on Etsy have found some pretty stellar retro sports tees … and companies like Puma are taking inspiration from old designs to manufacture new pieces, too.

BUY THE RETRO STYLE: Run for Liberty NYC race shirt on Etsy, $10

BUY THE MODERN STYLE: Marathon train tee from Puma, $20

VINTAGE TRACK JACKETS

retro sport

ROCK THE LOOK: Track jackets are so chic and comfortable! They don’t have to be worn from home to the gym, but can be worn from home to grocery store, home to the cafe, home to the movies … really, just about anywhere you need to throw a funky jacket on without a fussy fashion mess.

I love pairing track jackets with a pair of skinny jeans and heels too — especially vintage inspired designs with subtle collars, zip up fronts and secret hand pockets, like we see from Etsy and Puma, above.

BUY THE RETRO STYLE: Maroon vintage track jacket on Etsy (with pants!), $55

BUY THE MODERN STYLE: Men’s red vintage style track jacket from Puma, $90

VINTAGE WRIST BANDS

retro sport

ROCK THE LOOK: I’m going to be honest with you guys — I’ve never really USED a sweat band.

I guess I just like the look more than anything, almost as if I were wearing a bracelet!

I suppose that wiping my sweat on a sweatband would make much more sense than wiping it on my cool vintage tee, right? ;-)

BUY THE RETRO STYLE: All American wrist sweat bands (2) on Etsy, $3

BUY THE MODERN STYLE: White logo wrist sweat bands (2) from Puma, $10

  2. Hi there! Love your blog. I especially love that vintage women’s race photo that leads off this page:
    https://sammydvintage.com/vintage-style/retro-sports-clothing/

I am looking for a photo like that that I can blow up and do as wallpaper in my home gym. Do you remember where you got it and if I could get a high resolution photo? Thanks for any help you could provide!
