My Favorite Fall Vintage Finds: Best of the Web!

by Sammy in 2 Comments — Updated March 29, 2020

Happy November 1st everyone!!

If you woke up in New York City this morning, you woke up to some brrrrr temperatures! But I hate to be negative against the weather, because with a change in seasons comes a change in perspective [new goals!], activities [so many holidays fast approaching!] and of course, STYLE! [new vintage & thrifted pieces for your wardrobe!]

I’ve been focusing a lot on thrift store style lately on this site — which I can’t be TOO hard on myself about, because it’s just so much fun to enter a thrift store and emerge two hours later with an entire season’s worth of finds for the price of one new item at the mall store! But sometimes, admittingly, I like to indulge in vintage fashion curated and sold by some of the most stylish, successful and inspiring vintage sellers around. And the best part? I don’t have to enter a vintage store to show my support to entrepreneurial vintage lovers — I can do it all with my computer and a cup of coffee beside me!

So fall weather, bring your cold streak! I’m ready to embrace November and beyond with chic vintage style as found on the web. Let me know what you think of my picks below … I’m channeling some Sammy D faves, and also inspiration as seen on the streets of Manhattan!

vintage 80s sequin jacket

Buy This Vintage 80s Sequin Blazer ($64)  NOW on Market Publique!

If you know anything about me, you know that I’m an absolute sucker for sequins! Just call me Sammy D Sequin Queen ;-)

So when I spotted this awesome all-sequin 80s blazer in black by one of my favorite NYC vintage curators RockPaperVintage, I just HAD to say something about it. Unlike a lot of sequin finds I’ve thrifted for myself, this one looks like it fits to the T. No worries about belting or tucking it in for a more feminine shape.

I love when vintage just “fits” — like it was made for you, even if it had a previous owner! It was just waiting for you to give it a happy home ;-)

vintage black combat boots

Buy These Vintage 80s Lace Up Black Combat Boots ($49) NOW on Etsy!

When I was selling vintage from the Sammy D Showroom last spring, I had one customer — the founder of anewmode.com — repeatedly ask me to find her “black lace up combat boots in size 8.”

I could never find ’em in her exact size in the thrift store, but lookie here! I found some on the Etsy store of DIY YouTube superstar aglanceatmyworld’s Etsy shop! These are some sweet combat boots just made for stomping in the streets of New York or your ‘hood. I would love to pair them with some skinny jeans and a fitted tee … OH! and of course some sequins ;-) Although I think that there’d be quite a juxtaposition to that outfit, but you know what they say about style … it’s all in how you view it!

vintage rooster animal pin

Buy This Vintage Rooster Animal Pin ($8.50) on Etsy NOW!

Animals are ALWAYS trendy — and if you watched even a millisecond of the fall/winter ’10 runway shows last year, you saw that animal print a la leopard, cheetah, tiger & then some were the print darlings of the season.

But farm animals? I can’t recall a farm animal trend. Ever. So it’s time to start promoting the farm animals — the ones that quite honestly, define Americana much more than a safari animal. I’m loving this shiny rooster pin — I think it’s perfect for a black blazer, as an accessory for your bag, or even appended to a gold chain for an animal farm take on those popular “owl necklaces” that have been popular for the past few seasons.

This pin is from the Etsy shop of one of my favorite YouTube thrift queens … FeliciaJuly! Check out her page for some awesome advice on how to shop thrift in your own town.

Old McDonald had a farm … and some VINTAGE!

vintage leopard print pin up girl swimsuit

Buy This Leopard Print Bathing Suit Top ($88) on Market Publique NOW!

OK, so I take back that slander against the over abundance of safari prints this season … in all honesty, I’m always excited for the comeback of leopard!

A great tip I love to pass along to vintage lovers new & old is to wear bathing suits as tops with high-waisted pants. This pin-up girl inspired leopard bathing suit on Market Publique is a great piece to wear with black high-waisted, tapered pants, a pair of heels and YES! the sequin blazer from RockPaperVintage above.

Voila! Your new fall outfit.

vintage military wool coat

Buy This Vintage Military Coat ($350) on Market Publique NOW!

I admit, I’m always a victim of this scenario: I hate wearing a big, bulky jacket in the dead of winter because it hides my shape, makes me feel drab & bleh, and of course … hides the awesome outfit underneath. Not to mention it’s pain to find coat check or tuck your jacket into a safe corner at the bar or restaurant!

I’m also [my own] victim of not wanting to spend money on a good coat. The kind of coat that will you take anywhere — from the restaurant to a walk outside to errands in your neighborhood. Instead, I invest less money in many different coats so that I have “options.” The results? Sure, I have options, but they usually last a season and fill up my closet fast!

That’s why I love this military jacket — it’s simple, chic, on trend but most importantly, warm, well-made, versatile and has the longevity of many, many seasons. Sure, it costs a pretty penny, but what good investment doesn’t? My personal mission this season is to invest in a few great pieces instead of lots of little “so-so” ones.

Will you join me? ;-)

vintage 80s leather taupe belt

Buy This Vintage Taupe 80s Leather Belt ($15) on Market Publique NOW!

One of my favorite fall finds is THE belt of the season. I had a bright pink one in college that I wore with just.about.everything.in.my.entire.closet. It was seriously that important to my wardrobe — I didn’t know I would need it so much after first buying it, but then BOOM! It was like I wouldn’t have been able to survive without it.

That’s how I’m looking at this gorgeous vintage taupe belt with a gold buckle. It’s simple but unique enough to go with just about anything, while also adding that extra POP! you truly need to stand out from the crowd. It’s great for work — pair it with an A-line black skirt and a tucked in blouse — or just as a “slouch-over-any-pair-of-everyday-jeans” to give the average an oomph of awesome.

What’s that I hear about AWESOME? That vintage style is awesome? I thought so! ;-) Happy fall vintage shopping everyone! xx
