NYE Style: Darla Wears/Rocks/Shines in Sammy Davis Vintage

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

We’ve all felt it: We’re out shopping, and we see a piece at a store that just screams “[insert friend’s name here]”

We call said friend.  Tell them all about the piece – how we think it’d be PERFECT for them – and then, if we’re lucky, encourage friend to drop by the store on her own or with you as her companion.

But, usually neither happens — you just excitedly share the glorious potential of a piece of clothing if and when worn by your friend. The conversation is meaningful at the moment, and then forgotten. We’re too busy to actually go check out the piece, and we end up buying whatever we come across on our next shopping trip – instead of taking the time to listen to the opinions of others and to shop “around” for investment pieces that help us to reach our full style potential.

That’s why I love running my own vintage clothing business. I can acquire pieces with particular clients in mind and encourage them to see me at my next sale to check out the piece. My pieces are one-of-a-kind, and so there’s a greater draw for my clients to visit me when I request that they can. They know that if I’m telling them I have a great find for them, that it’s almost 100 percent true that it’s a freakin’ GREAT find.

And, much to my satisfaction, many of my recs have worked. My client’s eyes get wide and a huge smile appears on their face when they try it on and see the magic before their eyes – even if they are hesitant before hitting the dressing room. It takes encouragement and faith to instill style confidence in others.

Darla’s Christmas gift is one such example of having a piece that just screams someone’s name. This piece was literally shouting DARLA!!! all day and night. But unlike other clients, Darla didn’t need coaxing to put on this hot number. She knew from the moment she unwrapped this present that it’d be her next big ticket outfit.

I’ve had this amazing gold sequin dress, with tassles on the sleeves and along the angular cut of the body’s bottom, for about a year. I’ve actually worn it before – so I know firsthand its potential for greatness.

It’s one of those dresses you wear once a year because if you wear it any other times among the same social group, they will undoubtedly remember the last time you wore it. It’s a stop-anyone-in-the-street dress – one of those pieces that strangers grab you by the arm to question, and then gingerly touch regardless if they asked whether it was OK to cut into your personal space like that.

Thankfully, Darla is open. She’s OK with people fingering her sequins. And that’s exactly what happened when she wore this gold baby at a NYE party in New York City two evenings ago. She rocked the hell out of the party – full of socialites and important people I could only ever dream of meeting, but of course in her dress, she couldn’t help BUT meet. They were attracted to her like a shiny pretty thing.

Thanks for networking for S&S, Dar. It was all about the dress and the SDV touch.

Darla Christmas morning. Clearly enthused about her gift, she had to try it on at 3AM.

We grabbed a shot of the back to see how her tattoo showed. Definitely catches your eye, although you can’t see it in all of its glory — it descends down her entire back in leaves.

Um, can you tell what kind of view this is? That Darla went to a party on the 32nd floor of a Central Park West & 82nd Street penthouse, 3-floor apartment with 360 degree views of the city?

She saw the fireworks. She was ABOVE the fireworks. Lesson learned: Sequins get you far (and up!) in life.

Darla: “I love my dress from SDV so much! Look at me smiling, I love it so much!”

No, she didn’t really say that. But you get my drift.

Black on Brown, Scarves by Darla & Guido Hair

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’m a little scared to post this edition of What Sammy Wears [WSW], formerly Breezeway Beauty.

I’m scared for a few reasons. Allow me to share.

a.) I wore black on brown. Isn’t that supposed to be like, a fashion faux pas or something?

b.) I admit that I wear leggings under my jeans to keep warm in the winter. Like an old woman/6-year-old.

c.) My hair makes me look a bit like a guido.

THE OUTFIT: Black on Brown [with some aqua in between]

TURTLENECK: Honestly, I can’t remember = I own too many things

SWEATER [with pockets!]: Marshalls

NECKLACE: Topshop [the real version, aka LONDON]

BRACELETS: Vintage [thanks Mom!]

BELT: Consignment/gifted from anewmode.com

JEANS: H&M

LEGGINGS [under the jeans]: Forever 21

PASHMINA: Gift from Dubai [or rather, not a cheap off-the-NYC-street version] compliments of Darla

SHOES [see pic down under]: Payless

Guido hair [not intentionally] styled by Sammy D.

It gets pretty cold up here in the Northeast. I mean, not saying it doesn’t get cold in other places. But thanks to my extremely low blood circulation [sometimes my lips and nails turn purple. Literally], I like to layer. A lot. Thus, leggings below jeans.

If I had the chance to play strip poker during the winter months … I’d win. HA.

I swear to you, Payless is my favorite place to buy shoes. Now are they ethically produced? I don’t know. But do they freakin’ last? YES. I’ve had this pair since last fall, 2008.

And at the perfect price point, too – most Payless picks are under $40!

Darla’s Dubai Pashmina. Or, the DDP.

LOOK #1: A lazy drape over the shoulders and chest

LOOK #2: Double wrapped. Warmth baby, warmth.

LOOK #3: Old man fold & loop tie. Stylish, stays in place, practical.

LOOK #4: Head wrap —-> Style-photographer-stop-in-street-worthy. Yes.

Which pashmina look do you like best? #1, #2, #3 or #4? Comment now!

Caterer with a Cause

Friday, December 25th, 2009

… to bring you all of this fine news/fashion/vintage inspiration below!

First Up: What I wore / Breezeway Beauty as a caterer/chef assistant to Darla [Sassy & Sustainable road trip partner extraordinaire] at her home at The Creek in Huntingdon Valley, PA.

From 1PM to 1AM, I helped prep, prepare, and [by end of the evening] put away a kitchen full of fabulously festive foods & drinks, a la the creative culinary cooking of Darla.

While a caterer/chef’s assistant is supposed to “blend in,” I figured I could add a few nice touches to the standard black on black ensemble of said vocation.

I had two solid compliments from strangers tonight — including a 70-year-old+ woman complimenting my four-inch heels by JESSICA SIMPSON!

‘Tis the spirit of fashion.

Loves it.

[a random passerby … er, son of the household, Tom Arnold, decided to pose with me, a cake, a black dress & an awesome red belt. More on all of the previously mentioned below.]

The Look: Caterer [with] a Cause

The Dress: An investment piece from a trip to London, England in winter ‘05. It was one of those dresses I bought without any regard to the price, thanks to a sweet stash of Christmas money. I don’t remember the price but I’d imagine it was on sale at around 75-100 pounds or the equivalent of $150 to $200 American dollars. It’s lasted me nearly 4 years, fashioned for various events and in various ways. It’s a versatile & warm Little Black [London] Dress.

The Headband: Talk about practically vintage. This itty bitty headband [that you can hardly see in my mass of hair - that is growing back yay! - is from Prom ‘04.] Somehow, I’ve managed to keep it through the years – the multiple college dorm/apartment moves – and what not. Guess Prom Night was special … at least I kept the headband [but not the boy].

The Necklace: Purchased at one of those crazy Shecky’s “Girls Night Out”

The Belt: Borrowed from Darla! Thanks for letting me rummage in your closet doll.

The Tights: Bought at Marshalls.

The Shoes: Gifted/Consignment Jessica Simpson booties from Sabrina of anewmode.com

At The Creek aka Darla’s home, one of [two!] Christmas trees has VINTAGE LIGHTS!

They’re not really vintage – but designed to look as such. You can’t tell by these pictures of the beautiful glow captured on digital film, but if you can imagine oval shaped bulbs with a point. Sort of like this.

Up close!

My first & second [below!] Christmas gifts. Because I was going to be missing out on exchanging with my family on Christmas Eve, my stepmom Jes gave me a gift to open after the festivities hand ended. On her card, “For your future travels.”

Above, a book on road tripping in one year for the equivalent year cost of living.

Below, a book on thrifting [!!!] by a pretty prominent vintage clothing dealer & personality based in LA, Elizabeth Mason. She calls herself the “Paper Bag Princess.”

Which I don’t really get … but maybe the book will explain it.

Merry life, joy, and the pursuit of happiness everyone!

LEED Certified Buildings, Walking the World w/ Rose-Colored Tights, and Meeting Women Named Marie Claire

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Today was a big day in the world of Sammy Davis Vintage and Darla’s Food Has Feet.

We met with the fabulous web editor of MarieClaire.com [i.e. that woman named Marie] at my old location of employment [i.e. that LEED-certified building known as Hearst].

We can’t spill the beans, or provide any more details than what you are reading above.

But what I CAN do … is tell you about my outfit. Those rose-colored tights, for example.

Read on for more.

TIGHTS: Marshal’s, and undoubtedly a hit when I made my walk from NQRW to the Hearst Tower on 57th Street my own personal catwalk. Fishnets = catwalk walk. It’s just a requirement for wearing them.

While they now have a small hole in them, these tights are probably one of the best fishnet purchases I’ve ever made. And hard to replicate! You just can’t find flower threaded designs like this anymore. Note to readers: Hand wash ALL tights. Never put in the washing machine! Durability = sustainability

HEELS: “Gifted” consignment Jessica Simpson. Like Darla said to me today, “Are they really consignment if they were given to you?” Yes – because they were purchased with the intent of that individual wearing them. Now that they are no longer interested in them, and have since passed them on, they are gifted consignment. If I bought them, they’d be straight consignment. No “gifted” necessary. So there.

DRESS: Thrifted, Bargain Thrift, Germantown, Philadelphia 2007. Check out that cinched waist!

BOOTY: Yes, this hot little vintage piece for winter accentuates my backside. Just how I like my 80s cuts.

BLAZER: Speaking of the 80s … do you SEE the gold chain on this vintage jacket? And on the POCKETS, nonetheless? Crazy!

Thanks to my mother, for saving such an 80s definitive piece in her wardrobe.

JEWELRY: I love this shot. I thought I was so artsy.

Both bracelets gifted — black rungs, Betsy Johnson, thanks to friend/inspiration/colleague Tammy Tibbetts.

Silver bracelet, from a friend’s gifted/consignment collection. Don’t even remember when/where I got it. But love love love its sleekness.

THE ENTIRE LOOK: Anime eyes not included.

Is it just me — or do I have anime eyes? I really think I do.

OUTERWEAR: My step grandmother gave me this jacket. It was last worn when she was visiting her family in Russia. Yes, I said RUSSIA.

See those cloth cuffs? It’s like having a little extra warmth around the hands. None of this “breeze-blowing-in-my-sleeves” stuff. I mean, it gets WINDY in NYC! You’re walking against 30MPH gusts along 8th Avenue.

The only thing that’s going to protect you from that is a vintage purchase straight from the coldest/cold-war country of them all. RUSSIA.

SCARF: Goodwill/thrifted. Part of the SDV collection that is now just … Sammy’s collection. i.e., my closet ;-)

What do you guys think?

Was this a good look to impress Marie Claire today?
