Manhattan Vintage Show Recap: Where Vintage Style Reigns

Happy Monday everyone … and sweet memories of the weekend before and excitement for the week ahead!

I’m excited to share with you my experience at this past weekend’s Manhattan Vintage Show — THE place to shop, sell and be seen if you are anything from a simple fan to aficionado to die-hard diva of vintage style & retro fashion.

If you live in or near Manhattan and you missed it, DON’T FRET! The next show is scheduled for your vintage styling convenience on April 29th & 30th. Instead of looking to the past, look to the future and mark your calendars now!

I caught up with some old vintage friends — including Artifaktori, my favorite vintage store in good ‘ole beantown [aka Boston!] Massachusetts, and the every-girls’-feminine-fantasy vintage store 1 of a Find from Park Slope, Brooklyn.

In between schmoozing, oohing and aahing, I captured a few style photos, tried on some tight leather & puffy sleeves, and was even interviewed by CBS Channel 2 (New York) for this news segment on the show –I appear in the segment about a minute in. What a day!

MANHATTAN VINTAGE SHOW: WHAT I WORE

Jumpsuit: 1970s disco glam, purchased at the Brooklyn Flea

Earrings: Handmade from ’70s, gifted to me by my step grandmother

Hat: 1950s, from hometown vintage store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Faux Fur [new] coat: Christmas present from my fashion-loving mama. [wish she’d gone vintage!] I appreciate the piece because as a new bit of fashion, it’s truly one-of-a-kind and I hope to keep and love it for years. My advice: When buying new, invest in what you truly love now, and will continue to love into seasons to come.

Fishnets/Heels [new]: Fishnets from Marshals, heels from hometown department store — purchased last year via a post holiday sale!

ARTIFAKTORI VINTAGE from BOSTON

I first met Artifaktori founder & owner Amy [upper right picture] at the Manhattan Vintage Show last February. She is a seller on the vintage online marketplace Market Publique, and was selling in the Market Publique booth, led by the site’s amazing founder, Pamela Castillo.

I love Amy for her down-to-earth vibe and business smarts. She’s been selling vintage in Boston for years, and recently opened a second shop in the trendy shopping district of Charles Street  in addition to her Somerville location. Definitely check out Artifaktori if you live in Boston or just stopping by — I picked up a piece from Amy’s collection before leaving the show … keep scrolling to see which piece I gave a happy home!

1 of a FIND VINTAGE from BROOKLYN, NY

This Park Slope, Brooklyn vintage boutique deserves its name — the pieces, curated by owner Honey [yes, that is her name and I LOVE IT!] are truly one-of-a-find and KIND.

I was first introduced to the boutique when selling for Sammy Davis Vintage at the vintage market Artists & Fleas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Lorna [pictured to the left of Honey, lower left picture] worked for 1 of a Find at the market. We would try on fabulous things from one another’s collections and inspire the many tourists who wandered in to try on our pieces. I haven’t seen Lorna in almost two years. It’s so nice to run into old friends who always feel new!

The vintage piece from Artifaktori that I decided to give a HAPPY HOME!

I debated so many pieces. Should I get something fun? Something for the winter? Something for the spring/summer? What era? What cut? What style?

There are always style questions to be asked — and a style emotion to be felt. My style emotions were feeling pretty good in the lovely ’60s shift dress that honestly resembles a piece of art. I will have to do some further research on the designer and the print to know where and how the inspiration for this design came about.
