Eighties Flashback
The world of fashion is famous for eternally visiting past glories for future inspiration. And this season it’s the turn of the 1980s to provide us with some highly-entertaining articles of clothing that many had hoped that we may have seen the last of.
The high-impact shoulder-pads of the 1980s power business suit look to be making a huge comeback with some highly theatrical designs currently hitting the catwalk. In particular big retro belts with large, jarring buckles seem to be making a bit statement.
But the more refined classic styles of the 1980s are also in evidence with sleek and stylish whites in evidence everywhere. In particular, Rita Ora’s recent appearance on the One Show highlighted a dignified way of power-dressing. The clean white dress carried an air of style far removed from the sights usually witnessed on the X-Factor, where Ora is currently one of the judges delivering verdicts on another year’s round of singing hopefuls. The TV programme is renowned for showcasing the best and worst in fashion, and with the latest odds at Flashbitch showing that the betting is wide open for the chances of the judge’s success, it looks like being compulsive viewing for the remainder of 2015.
Seventies Influence
However, it’s not all about the 1980s, as a few more subtle elements of the 1970s have been creeping onto the catwalks too. In particular, Margot Tenenbaum from the film The Royal Tenenbaums appears to be this year’s unlikely fashion icon. And thankfully, her iconic faux fur coat looks to be protecting us from the icy winds of winter as warming 1970s textures are expected to be big this season.
Rather than the glam-rock aesthetics of previous years, it’s soft folky themes of the 1970s that are expected to be making it big in autumn 2015. So whether you’re into ponchos, kilts, or even the range of super-quilted coats that are making up the rounds, it’s time to get cosy in the style of the 1970s this autumn.
