5 Reasons Why Donating Your Clothes ROCKS

by Sammy Leave a Comment

Good friend and Spanish Harlem neighbor Miss Julia Bartz just dropped off above bag of old, unworn/unwanted clothing to her local Goodwill [for those who live Upper East Side and/or Upper UPPER East Side: The Goodwill is located at 121st & 3rd Avenue!].

I was so pumped & proud of her that I begged her to grab a shot of said donation bag with her iPhone.

5 reasons why donating your old threads rocks:

5.) DE-CLUTTERING YOUR CLOSET! Not only does the act of donating old clothes DE-CLUTTER your closet of pieces that just haven’t been worn and probably will continue NOT to be worn, but it helps you to evaluate what you do have. And sometimes reminds you of those pieces that got lost in the shuffle. Bring them to light!

4.) SUSTAINABLE STYLE! Buying second hand is about as sustainable as it gets. I call it effortless sustainability. You don’t even have to worry about whether the fabric was sourced or produced eco-consciously. Because … it was already made. You have no control. What you do have control over is whether you buy new versus second hand. And trust me, buying second hand is always better than new, unless you have hundreds of dollars to invest in a Stella McCartney green wardrobe. But we all know that’s a bit much, realistically speaking.

3.) SHOP THE THRIFT STORE! See above? Well, read that, then read this = you are already donating the clothes, so why not shop the racks while you’re there?

2.) CAUSE IT’S CHARITABLE. Salvation Army, Goodwill, church shops local to your community … these institutions exist to do good for the world. And by donating your clothes cost-free, and allowing thrift stores to sell them at low-cost, not only enables you to GIVE back to these charities and those they help, but to give back to your community by offering quality clothes for less. You go girl.

1.) TAX WRITE OFFS!! Do I hear April taxes calling? Make sure you get a tax write-off form from whatever facility you choose to unload. If they don’t offer one up front, ask for one. You don’t get anything in life without asking!
