HAPPY GRATEFULNESS FRIDAY EVERYONE!!!
It’s a gratefulness Friday, and you know what that means … there is some gratitude to share with you all today via a very special giveaway with gla.MAR.ous!
I first met Mary — the founder of gla.MAR.ous, an amazing hair accessory & fashion line — at the BUST Craftacular event in December. Mary introduced me to her patented headband in between interviewing her for an episode of Sammy Davis Vintage.
As soon as I put on a hairbow headband — I was HOOKED! I absolutely had to have one, so I took one home that day as an early Christmas present to me.
I’ve worn the hairbow quite a few times — and happy to share, I’ve kept in touch with Mary herself, running into her at the Independent Fashion Blogger’s conference over Fashion Week and keeping in touch with her via Twitter!
I was so excited to hear that Mary wanted to share her headbands with all of you fabulous & amazing vintage lovers & thrift warriors of Sammy Davis Vintage for today’s giveaway!!! There are just some things that we can’t get vintage or thrift — like a gla.MAR.ous headband!
Keep reading after the jump to read my gratefulness story of the week and of course, to see what headbands I’m giving away to 3 lucky winners who answer the question, “Describe a moment you felt glamarous!” in the comments to this blog post!
I want my weekly gratefulness giveaway to a be as much of a chance to give back to YOU as it is a chance to help spread word about great brands and the people behind them — so if you are an Etsy seller, a DIYer or independent fashion company; sell paraben-free hair care or want to share amazing healthy and delicious granola with the world … contact me to participate in the giveaway! I’m here to help you because you help me, too.
Thanks for being here so that I can be grateful for readers and supporters of vintage fashion & thrift store style. Have wonderful weekends everyone and happy entering!
spread vintage love, make style peace!
I am grateful for … Losing My Belongings Last Week
Last weekend, I spilled tea on my lap top computer. I had placed the mug next to the keyboard and in a hurry, my elbow knocked the mug and its contents directly onto a place where it never should have spilled: on my computer.
I grabbed a bath towel in frantics, attempting to undo the damage of water seeping and corroding into the keyboard. I shook it upside down, used a hair dryer … banged it (slightly) against my desk.
For a few minutes everything seemed OK .. that is, until the keys started to have a mind of their own and my “n” key completely stopped worked. Shutting down and restarting proved futile, because my password contained an “n.” Go figure!
I know what you’re thinking right now. Something like, “Aw man, that really stinks! I’m really sorry for this unfortunate accident!”
Well, if you’re thinking that — thank you! However, you can stop feeling sorry if you want, because here’s the thing: This is NOT the first … or the second .. or really even 10th time something like this has happened to me.
Or rather — and that’s what the entire point of this gratefulness story is — what I have caused to happen to me by my own actions.
We often think that accidents are just that: accidents. We are hands free from the blame because what were we supposed to do? They were accidents!!!
I’m grateful for “losing my things” last week because the lesson the universe is giving me to be meticulously mindful of my valuables has finally kicked me in the butt and left a memorable bruise. Two days after ruining my laptops keyboard, I lost my digital camera on a bus after it flew from an (open) purse I had on the seat.
Could I have prevented the bus from jerking? No. Could I have been meticulous about my things and immediately upon opening my purse, closed it shut and put it somewhere safe? Yes. Did I do that? Um … no. And that’s why I lost my camera.
So here’s the thing about me: I’m an extreme case.
I’ve had my car broken into three times. Not once, but three. Each time I had too many things visibly showing worth stealing. The third time, an iPad, Macbook, FLIP cam and more were taken.
I’ve dropped my Blackberry in water, only to revive it with a hairdryer and putting it into a bag of rice (it works!).
I’ve lost the camera lens to a $500 Olympus camera (my purse at it!). I’ve lost things that my business partner purchased for the business … with his own money.
I’ve lost things that friends and family have given me, too — including sentimental necklaces left in the sand, like when I lost my friend’s old engagement ring on vacation.
I’ve lost a cell phone twice (once, on the street and another time at a restaurant).
Oh, and then there was that OTHER digital camera I lost when first moving to New York City ….
See the reoccurring trend? So here’s the issue, and also here’s the gratefulness we can all pull from this: Everything happens for a reason.
Why do I keep losing things? Because my behavioral patterns are the same.
Why do I keep losing things to learn? Because while extremely productive, and extremely talented at multi-tasking, some higher power is showing me how to sloooooowwwwwwww down.
If I don’t slow down when handling my life, there will be more than just digital cameras and laptop computers taken from me — because of my speed and my lack of premeditated thought at times, it could very well be my life someday.
There is a reason we “are careful.” I’m grateful that I can just say I’ve lost a few pieces of electronics versus something far more valuable and irreplaceable.
Since last weekend, I’ve been thinking more. I’ve had more pre-action thoughts, and I’ve literally said out loud to myself to “slow down” and to “pause” between activities.
Unfortunately, old habits die hard. But at least I’ve acknowledged the hardest part … the problem. And for that recognition, I am grateful.
Thank you all for reading this week’s gratefulness post! I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below, along with your entry to this week’s gratefulness giveaway!
