These cute bracelets are quick and easy to make. All you need is a vintage handkerchief, a few crafty supplies, and a spare hour tops. These would make great gifts to friends — or for your own jewelry collection! Here are the steps.

1. Collect Your Supplies

You will need:

  • Vintage handkerchief (chose for the colors, not the pattern, as the fabric will get scrambled as you cut and braid)
  • Superglue
  • End caps
  • Clasp
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Bamboo skewer
  • 2. Cut and Sew

Next cut the handkerchief into strips that are approximately one inch wide. Chose three with pretty coloring, and sew them together at the top with a few sturdy stitches.

3. Braid and Glue

Next you will braid the strips fairly tightly. Some fraying is fine. Don’t pull so hard that your braid is firm and warped. Instead try to apply consistent tension as you braid so that it looks even. Measure your bracelet so that it will fit nicely around your wrist, and trim it to size.  Put in a few stitches to the bottom of the braid, to hold the strips of material together. Apply glue to either end of the braid.

4. Attach The Clasp

All you have to do next is fit the end cap onto each end of the braid over the glue. Sadie, who I learned this from, advises using a bamboo skewer to tuck the ends in. That is a great idea! Put on the clasps, and your bracelet is done.

I hope that you love this bracelet idea as much as I do. Let me know how it goes for you in the comments below.

  1. These bracelets look super cute. I’ve got plenty of fabric, but I can’t seem to find any end caps that are the appropriate size. Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you, Autumn

  2. How long do you cut the strips?
